Courier Service in Bethesda and Montgomery County: NIH, Walter Reed and the I-270 Corridor

DC Courier Services ยท October 22, 2026

Montgomery County is where Washington's medicine, science and regulation live. The National Institutes of Health and Walter Reed sit a few hundred yards apart in Bethesda; the Food and Drug Administration runs from White Oak in Silver Spring; the National Institute of Standards and Technology from Gaithersburg; and along Interstate 270 between them is one of the largest life-science clusters in the country. For a courier, it is also one of the more exacting places to deliver: federal campuses inspect vehicles, a military base checks identification, and a laboratory's cooler cannot wait at a gate. This guide explains how courier service in Bethesda and Montgomery County works in practice โ€” what the big campuses require, who sends what, and what to tell dispatch so a package clears the first time.

The county in numbers

The Census Bureau's estimate for Montgomery County is 1,074,582 residents as of July 2025, up from 1,062,061 at the 2020 count, with 27,677 employer establishments and about 440,000 jobs in its 2023 business figures. The county's economic development corporation counts more than 350 life-science companies and calls the county the third-largest biopharma cluster in the United States, with 18 federal agency headquarters inside its borders. That is the customer base for a Montgomery County courier: hospitals, laboratories, biotech firms, federal offices, the law firms and title companies that serve them, and the pharmacies and clinics along every main road. Our Maryland courier page lists the county by town; the Bethesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, Chevy Chase and Potomac pages cover each.

NIH: a 310-acre campus that inspects every vehicle

The National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda covers 310 acres with roughly 75 buildings, according to the National Capital Planning Commission, which reviews the campus master plan and expects its population to reach about 25,500 employees by 2033. At its centre is the NIH Clinical Center, which describes itself as the world's largest clinical research complex; its Hatfield building has 242 inpatient beds and 90 day-hospital stations. Specimens, research materials, records and supplies move in and out of that campus all day, and most of them cannot be mailed.

NIH publishes its entry rules, and they shape every delivery we make there. All visitors enter through the Gateway Center at the Medical Center Metro station; visitors aged 16 and over show a government-issued photo ID; visitor passes must be displayed at all times. All vehicles and their contents are inspected on entering the campus, and the inspection may use detection dogs, electronic devices or a manual search. The Gateway Vehicle Inspection Station handles cars on weekday mornings, and outside those hours โ€” and for delivery vehicles at any hour โ€” the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Facility on Rockville Pike between North and Wilson Drives is the entry point, open around the clock, inbound only, with vehicle inspections and visitor badges issued there. NIH's facilities office describes that building's purpose plainly: to inspect and process arriving delivery vehicles before allowing access.

What that means for a run: a driver carrying a cooler to Building 10 budgets time for the inspection lane, carries ID, and needs the building number, the room and the name of the person expecting the package โ€” campus staff route by building, and a street address alone is not enough. For time-critical specimens we send the driver to the inspection facility rather than the Gateway Center, and dispatch has the recipient's phone number ready. Our medical courier and STAT medical courier pages describe the specimen side; the temperature control post covers coolers that have to survive a wait at a gate.

Walter Reed: a military base, not a hospital driveway

Across Rockville Pike, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center opened in September 2011 when the 2005 base realignment merged Walter Reed Army Medical Center with the National Naval Medical Center. In March 2024 the hospital reported that it had passed 150 inpatient beds on its way to a 200-bed goal. It sits on Naval Support Activity Bethesda, and the base, not the hospital, sets the entry rules.

Those rules are specific. Commercial vehicles use the Commercial Vehicle Inspection gate โ€” Gate 5, at the Uniformed Services University โ€” on weekdays between 5:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and all vehicles coming onto the base are subject to inspection. First-time visitors complete a Navy access form, SECNAV 5512/1, at the Visitor Control Center at 102 Wood Road, which is open weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; pre-vetted access requests are due three business days ahead, with no exceptions to that deadline, and the base asks visitors to report to the center at least an hour before they are expected. Gate 1 is open 24 hours for those already cleared.

For a courier the practical rule is: a delivery to a clinic or office on the base is arranged through the person receiving it, who tells us the sponsor's name and the department, and we plan the gate into the schedule. A late-afternoon "can you get this to Walter Reed in an hour" is possible only if the receiving office can meet the driver at a gate or the driver already holds access for the day. We say that at booking rather than at the gate.

FDA at White Oak, NIST at Gaithersburg

The Food and Drug Administration's White Oak campus at 10903 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring has ten office and four laboratory buildings totalling 3.1 million rentable square feet, by the agency's own description. Regulatory submissions are largely electronic now, but the campus still receives samples, physical exhibits, sealed correspondence and the paper that an advisory committee or a meeting requires, and the firms that deal with FDA โ€” the regulatory consultants in Rockville, the law firms downtown โ€” are regular senders. Building numbers matter at White Oak as they do at NIH.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology occupies a 580-acre campus with 55 buildings at 100 Bureau Drive in Gaithersburg, where roughly 3,600 employees, guest researchers and contractors work on an average day, according to the agency. Calibration items, reference materials and instruments move to and from NIST by hand because they are fragile, valuable or both.

The I-270 corridor: labs, biotech and the daily route

Between the federal campuses runs the life-science corridor โ€” Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown โ€” where the county's 350-plus life-science companies cluster around the Shady Grove and Twinbrook research areas. These are the customers who book routes rather than runs: a sample pickup at the same three buildings every afternoon, a shuttle between a company's two sites, a daily sweep from clinics to a reference laboratory, a weekly delivery of reagents from a distributor in Beltsville. That is the everyday work of a Rockville or Gaithersburg courier, and most of it is medical specimen and lab delivery.

A dedicated daily route is a driver assigned to the same stops at the same times every business day, which is how a lab avoids the two most expensive words in specimen logistics, "rejected" and "re-collect." The corporate routes page explains how a route is priced and run; the multi-stop delivery post explains why bundling stops saves money; and the biotech and pharma industry page covers the handling that research materials need โ€” ambient, refrigerated or frozen, with a logged chain of custody. For firms that also ship to Baltimore's research institutions, the DC to Baltimore corridor post describes that run.

The courthouse in Rockville and the county's paperwork

Montgomery County's courts sit at 50 Maryland Avenue in Rockville. The Maryland Judiciary lists the Circuit Court's hours as 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday except legal holidays, and the county's District Court locations keep the same hours. Deeds for county property are recorded with the Circuit Court's land records office, where the recording window runs from 8:30 to 4:00, after the county's Transfer Office has done its part โ€” the real estate and title industry page covers the closing runs that depend on that two-step sequence. Law firms in Bethesda and Rockville send filings, courtesy copies and signed originals downtown as well; see the legal and court filing courier page and the post on court filing deadlines in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

Pharmacies are the county's other paper-and-package business. The post on prescription delivery across Montgomery County covers identity checks and signatures; the post on delivering to patients at home covers the privacy side.

What to tell dispatch for a Montgomery County run

The building number and room for any federal campus, plus the recipient's name and phone; the sponsor's name and department for the base; whether the package is a specimen, and if so ambient, refrigerated or frozen; the deadline that actually matters (a courthouse window, a lab's cut-off, a meeting time); and whether the run continues into the District or Virginia so we can plan one driver for all of it. With those, a Bethesda or Rockville pickup reaches almost anywhere in the region the same day. Book on the booking form, or set up a route through business accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can a courier deliver onto the NIH campus in Bethesda?

Yes, through the campus inspection process. NIH says all vehicles and their contents are inspected on entry, visitors enter through the Gateway Center at the Medical Center Metro, and delivery vehicles use the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Facility on Rockville Pike. Give us the building and room number and the name of the person expecting the package; the driver allows time for inspection.

How does a delivery to Walter Reed work?

Walter Reed sits on Naval Support Activity Bethesda, a military base. Commercial vehicles use the Commercial Vehicle Inspection gate on weekdays during its posted hours, and every vehicle is subject to inspection. First-time visitors are processed at the Visitor Control Center on Wood Road. Tell us the clinic or department and the sponsor's name; we plan the gate time into the run.

Which areas of Montgomery County do you cover same day?

All of it: Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Silver Spring, Wheaton, Potomac, Olney, Takoma Park and the rest of the county, plus the District, Northern Virginia and Baltimore on the same run.

Do you run daily routes for labs along I-270?

Yes. A dedicated route driver runs the same stops at the same time every business day โ€” lab to lab, lab to reference lab, office to office โ€” and on-demand runs fill the gaps. The Montgomery County life-science corridor is the busiest part of our Maryland work.

What should be on the package for an NIH or FDA delivery?

The building number, room or suite, the recipient's name and phone, and your reference. Federal campuses route by building, not by street address, and the inspection staff will ask who is expecting it.

Can you file documents at the courthouse in Rockville?

Yes. The Montgomery County Circuit Court at 50 Maryland Avenue in Rockville is open 8:30 to 4:30 on weekdays except legal holidays; we deliver filings to the clerk's counter inside that window and bring back the stamped copy.
